I trimmed an inch of the tops of the shin/calf pieces so i could bend my knees more, for bending down, and climbing stairs. People with longer legs need not do this. It doesnt look much different and no one will notice anyways. For the thigh pieces, I glued the two halves together permanently as I don't have to separate the two halves if I put them on before my boots. The glued seam looks cleaner and there is no velcro gap. ^top MISCELLANEOUS Not visible in the pictures (cuz I haven't taken pictures yet) is my voice amp. This just amplifies my voice and gives it a 'mechanical' quality to it, like a voice on a walkie-talkie. I used the amp recommended by dale (galaxy trading) from radio shack. It comes in a small white plastic case, with an input jack for a mic and volume control. For the longest time, I could NOT figure out where to mount the stupid thing. I had taken it completely apart as it was too big in the case to mount anywhere invisibly. I also experienced ear-splitting feedback when I tried mounting the speaker in the chest. It was just too close to the mic in the helmet. I didn't want to mount it on my belt as it would look out of place. So, with a bit of thought, I finally mounted the electronic circuit board with volume control in one of the thigh drop boxes. I mounted the speaker in the other drop box. One of my friends helped me re-solder some of the capacitors on the circuit board to make them sit 'flatter'. I hot glued the speaker and circuit board into the drop boxes. I slipped the 9V battery into one of the hollow rectangular spaces in the belt. It fit perfectly. I plugged the mic into the jack and ran it up to the helmet. It works pretty well, without any feedback if the volume control is set at midrange. It's cool because there are no visible wires or external devices, and it's not obvious where the amplified voice is coming from ;-). Both my voice from inside my helmet and the amplified voice can be heard at the same time so the overall impression is that the sound is coming from the whole body. I had a hard (impossible) time finding boots, but finally bought some white doc martens with black soles which look pretty good. I swapped out the black laces for white ones and I just covered the laces with an extra piece of ABS plastic velcroed on. The doc martens are also very comfy. I have since ordered a custom pair from Galaxy Trading. ^top WEARING SEQUENCE This is the sequence that I found works best for me so far. Black body suit (duh) Thigh pieces Boots Shin/calves Ab/lower back piece. The back piece is velcroed to the belt, and I pre-attach the rear canister Neck piece and microphone Chest/upper back. They are attached via the shoulders and I pre-attach the shoulder pieces and biceps pieces then slip the whole thing over my head like a t-shirt Gloves Forearms Hand pieces Helmet Wearing the suit takes some getting used to. If the cod piece and lower ab pieces are not seperate, it severely limits flexibility at the waist. Bending down to pick up something from the ground is almost impossible. The advantage to having the cod piece seperate is that you can go to the bathroom without removing the suit! (number 1 only of course! ;-) The suit isnt breathable, so you tend to perspire under the armour. This is where the choice of black body glove is important. I got a two-piece suit made of running tights and top made by Brookes. They're made of special fabric which 'wicks' away perspiration from your body and helps keep you cool. When I was at the Shrine convention for 4 hours in costume, I was quite comfortable in the suit except for the helmet. The helmet DOES get warm! I think the helmet is the limiting factor to how long you can walk around wearing the suit. A periodic breather with the helmet off is helpful. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
